Fishing - Fly Fishing Tours, Surfcasting, Deep Sea
Fishing Adventures
Steve guides for all fishermen, whether you
favour freshwater angling on New Zealand's lakes, rivers and streams,
or salt water with beach and deep sea fishing tours. No matter
your preference, river, deep sea or beach, all the great fishing
holes are within a few miles of Temuka and his home.
Dry fly or wet fly fishing is
most common for both rivers and streams, especially when angling
for the brown or rainbow trout in this area, but spin fishing can
also be effective. The Opihi, Tengawi, Opuha, Upper Opihi, Waihi,
Te Mona, Kakahu, Orari, and Ohape rivers all have a proud history
of trout fishing and are within a short drive. Every
year large trophy fish are caught as well as the
many medium size fish (In 2003 the world's largest rainbow trout
was caught in the Tekapo Canals, an hour and a half's drive inland),
so your fishing trip is sure to be fun and successful. Make sure
you check out our information pages to find out more about fly fishing
in our local rivers.
Salmon are also found in
the rivers between Christchurch and Dunedin, and the main ones, the Waitaki
and Rangitata rivers are very handy to Steve's accommodation. Trout and
salmon fishing is seasonal, thus ensuring a viable on going fishery for all to
enjoy. Access to rivers is by public tracks, and with permission
across private land. The salmon season runs from October to April,
reaching its peak from January to March, so make sure to book your
fishing trip early.
Surfcasting is great fun for
those of you don't wish to travel too far from the homestay, but
still have an exciting time satisfying your angling needs. Good
size shark are regularly caught in sight of Steve's home.
Steve's main guided fishing tour
involves a day that starts by fly fishing for trout on a local
river, before moving nearer to the mouth and using a lure to
try and hook a salmon, and ends up by surfcasting on the beach
for shark. This only costs $300.00 per person for the whole
day, and can be easily adapted to suit your particular preferences.
Steve prefers to limit group numbers to three or less, as this
enables him to give you that personalized service that you want.
If deep sea fishing is your
leisure pastime, then Steve can arrange a charter for you to fish
for some of the local variety, like blue cod. It is essential to
give Steve plenty of notice if you would like him to arrange a deep
sea charter, so contact him early.
Seasonal activities like whitebaiting
can be arranged, but make sure you check the calendar. Further angling
tips and resources can be found in the information sections, or
contact Steve directly with your fishing questions.
